How to Find Your Ring Size Without a Sizer
Finding your ring size at home accurately, even without a sizer kit, with tips for warm vs cold days.
Ring sizing done wrong = you paid $200 for a ring that spins all day or gets stuck. Here's how to size yourself accurately with what you have at home.
Method 1: Borrow a ring that fits
The most accurate method — if you have a ring that currently fits the finger you want to buy for.
- Lay the ring flat.
- Measure the inner diameter edge-to-edge across the opening, in millimeters.
- Use our size chart: 15.7 mm = size 5, 16.5 = 6, 17.3 = 7, 18.2 = 8, 19.0 = 9.
Accuracy: ±0.25 size. The best approach we have.
Method 2: String / paper strip
If you don't have a ring to borrow:
- Cut a thin strip of paper or use a piece of string, ~8 cm long.
- Wrap snugly around the base of the finger you want to size. Tight enough to not slide but comfortable.
- Mark where the string overlaps, then lay it flat and measure in millimeters.
- That's your finger circumference. Divide by 3.14 to get diameter → match to our chart.
Accuracy: ±0.5 size. Good enough for a comfortable first order, with our free resize as backup.
When to measure
Finger size fluctuates by up to half a size across a day. Measure:
- Afternoon (fingers are at average size)
- Room temperature (not right after exercise, not in cold)
- Three times — use the average
Knuckle clearance
If your knuckle is much larger than your finger base (common), size to the knuckle, not the base. A ring that fits the base but can't clear the knuckle won't go on.
Stacking rings
Stacking rings on the same finger take up space. If you plan to stack 2-3 rings on one finger, size up 0.5 on the supporting rings (not the anchor). See our stacking ring guide.
Common mistakes
- Sizing from a ring worn on a different finger (fingers vary)
- Measuring first thing in the morning (fingers are smaller then)
- Sizing too tight "for security" (ends up stuck)
- Sizing too loose "so it's comfortable" (ends up lost)
