Hoop Earring Sizes — What Size to Wear and Why

Hoop earrings are the easiest "everything" earring — if you pick the right size. Too small and they disappear; too big and they read costumey. Here's a sizing guide that works.

The measurement

Hoop size is measured inner diameter (the distance across the open space), in millimeters. Common sizes:

• 8–12 mm: huggies — hug the earlobe, barely dangle. Feels like a stud, looks like a hoop.
• 13–15 mm: small everyday — the most versatile size. Fits all face shapes, all outfits.
• 16–20 mm: medium — noticeably dangling. Reads "dressed."
• 22–25 mm: large — statement territory. Great with hair up.
• 28+ mm: bold statement — intentional focal point.

Face shape notes

This matters less than most articles imply, but if you're choosing between sizes:

• Round faces — elongated oval hoops lengthen; small huggies can accentuate roundness.
• Oval/heart faces — everything works. Your call.
• Square/angular faces — round hoops soften. Avoid angular earring shapes.
• Long faces — medium-to-large round hoops balance length.

Width also matters

Hoop width (the thickness of the metal itself) changes the read entirely:

• 1–1.5 mm: fine — delicate, minimal, everyday.
• 2–3 mm: medium — weighty without being loud. Our go-to.
• 4–5 mm: chunky — statement, fashion-forward.

With hair up vs down

Size up when hair is up (the hoops show completely). Size down when hair is down (smaller sizes peek out more gracefully). If you mostly wear your hair down, 14–16 mm is the sweet spot.

With outfits

• Office / daily → 14 mm, medium width
• Dinner / dressed up → 18–22 mm, medium-chunky
• Formal event → 22–28 mm, medium width (not chunky — chunky reads casual)
• Beach / casual → 16–20 mm chunky

When in doubt

Get the 14 mm. If you only own one pair of hoops, this is the size that works for 95% of occasions.
