The Anatomy of a Fashion Jewelry Brand — What Makes One Good
What separates a fashion jewelry brand worth buying from one that isn't — the 7 signals.
Fashion jewelry has low barriers to entry. Anyone with a Shopify store and a supplier in Yiwu can call themselves a "handcrafted jewelry house" and sell plated brass at $80 a ring. Here's how to tell which brands are real.
Signal 1 — specific materials
Real brands tell you exactly what their jewelry is: "2.5μ 18K gold vermeil over recycled sterling silver." Fake brands say "gold-toned" or "plated in precious metals." If they can't name the micron thickness, assume it's thin plating.
Signal 2 — visible quality program
Does the brand offer lifetime re-plating? Free resizing? Actual warranty (2+ years)? These services are expensive to run — only brands with real supply chains offer them. Marketing language ("we stand behind our pieces") is free; an actual guarantee is costly.
Signal 3 — transparent origin
Where is the piece made? A real brand answers this honestly — "hand-finished in Italy," "made in India," "assembled in our Thai atelier." Vague answers ("crafted with care by skilled artisans") are red flags. Origin transparency is table stakes.
Signal 4 — sizing and fit
Good brands make sizing easy: printable sizer tools, free resizing, multiple option points. Brands that pretend one-size-fits-all is a sizing strategy — aren't serious.
Signal 5 — real customer service
Send an email with a detailed question. Response time under 24 hours? Actual human who reads the question? That's a real brand. Chatbot + 72-hour response means they're shipping volume, not serving customers.
Signal 6 — photography coherence
Does the product look the same on the model as in the flatlay? Many brands use rendered 3D images or heavily retouched product shots — and you receive something different. Real brands' product photos look like what you receive.
Signal 7 — returns work
A 30-day return policy is marketing. Try it: send something back. If the refund takes 6 weeks to arrive, the return policy is theater. Real brands refund within 3-5 business days of receipt.
The quick test
Find the brand's "Materials" or "About" page. If it's three sentences of marketing fluff with no specifics, skip. If it's 500+ words on exactly what they use, how they source, what they won't do — consider.

Price check
A vermeil ring under $40 — almost certainly under-plated. A sterling silver chain under $25 — usually thin stock, poorly finished. The price floor for "lasts 5 years" vermeil is around $80-100 for a ring, $50-70 for earrings. Below that, math doesn't work.
