Pearl Earrings for the Bride — Size, Shape, Style Guide
What brides should know about pearl earrings: size, shape, finish, and fit for the day.
Pearl earrings are the most-worn piece of bridal jewelry in the world. Here's what to think about before you pick yours.
Shape: drop vs stud vs halo
Drop pearls — most bridal, most graceful. The motion when you turn your head is the whole appeal. Our Lune Pearl Drops are 28 mm total drop, which hits the middle of a standard earlobe — neither too long nor too short.
Pearl studs — understated, usable long after the wedding. A 7–8 mm round stud is the classic size for a formal stud. Larger (9+ mm) reads statement; smaller (5–6 mm) reads everyday.
Halo pearl — a small pavé halo around a center pearl. More jeweled, more traditional bridal. Less versatile afterwards.
Size: match your ear and neckline
- Small earlobes → 6–7 mm feel balanced
- Average earlobes → 7–8 mm is the sweet spot
- Larger earlobes / statement look → 8–10 mm
If your wedding dress has a high neckline (boat, jewel, off-shoulder turtleneck), go smaller and more delicate. If your dress has a deep V or strapless — you have more room for a 28+ mm drop.
Freshwater vs saltwater
90% of modern bridal pearls are freshwater — AAA+ grade freshwater pearls are nearly indistinguishable from mid-grade saltwater at a fraction of the cost. Save the Akoya / South Sea premium for "jewelry you'll wear for 40 years" budget territory. See our Pearl 101 for the grading deep-dive.
Color
White is classic bridal. Cream reads warmer (better on warm-toned skin). Rose-ish freshwater is gently untraditional but works beautifully with champagne-colored dresses.
Metal
Match the metal of your engagement ring. Gold setting = warm bride, silver/white = cool. Don't mix unless you have a bridge piece (see mixing metals guide).
For the bridesmaids
Small (6–7 mm) pearl studs in the same metal as the bridal jewelry, gifted in identical boxes. Each bridesmaid keeps something she'll actually wear again.
